Win a Young Child!
First published: 15th June 2015
What do you expect a school to offer? The opportunity for your child to enslave other children, perhaps? The website of the Committee for Home School Cooperation features an online survey that says:
1) Do you agree that admission to prestige schools helps young children to win their counterparts at the set-off line?
- Very agree
- Agree
- No opinion
- Disagree
- Very disagree
The problems are:
- The verb "win" can be used without an object, or with an object that describes the nature of the competition (e.g. "John won the race.") or with an object that describes the prize (e.g. "Arsenal won the cup."), but the object cannot be the other competitors, for that, a different verb, "beat", is used. Here, young children are getting other young children as prizes in some, unspecified competition.
- "The set-off line" is not a normal English phrase, "starting line" is common.
- "Very agree" and "very disagree" are incorrect. "Strongly" is the right intensifier here.
